The Grand Trip
Thursday, Elul 9

Picture1.jpg

The buses pulled in and it was plain for all to see that this was a grand trip. In fact we knew it all the night before with ur YSP bags filled with goodies.

It was extremely courteous of Peter Pan to go out and buy new buses just for our trip. It was off to the biggest paintball place in America, this was matched by the most paint balls ever given out by camp.

After that it was off to the JCC in Binghamton, for a grand barbecue and a swim. We were then led up the hill by the SUV to the Chabad House in Binghamton, it was also grand, grand was the order and word of the two days.

Time to get much needed rest because the next day it was timeto go through the border and into Canada. Once through the border ir was off to the maid of the mist without delay. One of Hashems truly magnificent creations seemed to be only a few feet away. It was then time to start heading a few miles down the river where the awesome jetboating awaited.

No time to waste as the buses rolled stright towards Hamilton where night cruise with Chinese dinner was a befittingly grand way to end off.

This in no way undermines the tefillos and learning that was also done on the trip all with the proper respect.

YSPorts Comes To A Close...
Sunday, Elul 5

YSPorts.jpg

The YSPorts league came to its pulsating crescendo as the Team of Atoh defeated Vihi Sheomdo in dramatic fashion. The outfield was a bit soggy and the in-field a bit muddy but it didn't deter the fans from packing the grass banks to witness the Championship game.

It was a befitting end to an exciting sports league. There were ups and downs for all teams. The awards ceremony will follow at the banquet.

52 Complete Entire Perek
Sunday, Elul 5

GBP.JPG

More than 50 bochurim gathered for an oral test on Perek Lulav V’Aravah of Maseches Sukkah, at Yeshiva Summer Program in Morristown on Sunday.

Lubavitch Bochurim often come under scrutiny in terms of their learning ability.

Late Sunday morning in the Yeshiva Summer Program in Morristown, NJ (Y.S.P.) there was vivid testimony that with the right encouragement the bochurim can exhibit great ability.

More than 50 bochurim gathered in the Zal for an oral test on Perek Lulav V’Aravah of Maseches Sukkah by Rabbi Chaim Schapiro.

The testimony was not the test. The testimony was the fact that each one of these bochurim conscientiously went about memorizing the Perek by heart, all on their own time, while being in a summer program with a very full schedule.

Many of the bochurim admitted that the learning they accomplished in Y.S.P., in terms of both quality and quantity, was undoubtedly more than any other summer program and even more than they normally learn in academic months.

Rabbi Mendel Goldberg, the camp's director, was delighted with the bochurim's achievements. "I am happy that YSP continues to provide that vital bridging step between school and Mesivta" he said.

"The bochurims' feat proves once again how seriously we take the learning in YSP," said Goldberg. "And a summer experience such as this will surely contribute to a successful entry into Mesivta."

A large portion of the deserved recognition must go to their dedicated maggidei shiurim and to the tireless Learning Director, Rabbi Ari Wilschanski, who literally encouraged the bochurim every hour on the hour. Besides for the Gemmorah, the talmidim with the encouragement of Rabbi Wilschanski produced over a hundred interesting questions and insights into the material learned over the summer.

Melaveh Malka & Judgement Night
Motzaei Shabbos, Elul 4

MM 3.jpg

There was no better way to send off the last shabbos then with a smashing Melaveh Malka. This time however there was a difference, it was time for the staff members to answer for their actions as they were summonsed to court by the Talmidim. While all cases were settled amicably, the fits of hysteria were uncontrollable. The panel of judges were on their toes to ensure good judgement was handed down in the various cases. The jury from Tifferes were also full of vigor as they passed unbiased judgement.

On the whole it was a befitting end to the last shabbos in YSP 5770.

Meanwhile in the Lebedike league Atoh beat Marku in game 3 of the playoffs advancing to the semi-finals, but not slowing down just yet Atoh ended up on top of Hu Elokeinu in the semi-finals football game, advancing to the championships.

Tomorrow 6:45 this tremendous season will come to a close and we will have the final champions.

Congratulations teams of Atoh and Vihi-sheomdo for making it to the championships.

YSPorts Playoffs...
Friday, Elul 3

As the rainless forty game season comes to a close the playoff race is at its hype, the 4 Lebedike teams and the 3 Hartzige teams racing for the fourth seed in its conference, the season ends with a tie in the fourth seed Anim and Dveikus in the Hartzige league and Hoaderes and Marku in the Lebedike league, leaving Darkecha (6th place) only 1 point behind 4th place.

Team Marku won over Hoaderes in the tie breaking football game, but they are now down 1 game to nothing vs. Atoh in a 3 game series.

Team Anim came from behind beating Dveikus in their own tie breaking baseball game 4 - 2, only to find themselves knocked out of the playoffs after losing 2 out of 3 games to Vihi Sheomdo.

Hartzige League: Shamil beat Tzomo in 2 of 3 playoff games to advance to the semi-finals which will be taking place tomorrow against Vihi Sheomdo. (sport selection will be a lottery).

Lebedikeh League: Hu Elokeinu beat Rachamono in 2 of 3 games to advance to the semi-finals which will be taking place as well tomorrow against the undecided Atoh or Marku depending on who wins the playoff series.

With all the action we will see today who will make it to the championships.

Bluteh Bashes
Friday, Elul 3

Bluteh.jpg

Throughout YSP there has been an ongoing mivtza, the mivtza is encouragement to positively enforce certain areas such as brochos from a siddur, chitas and Rambam. The bochurim fill out duchois for which they earn points. Every once in a while the bochurim have the ability to spend their bluteh for exclusive events. Rosh Yeshiva Gives Shiur
Thursday, Elul 2

Shiur Kloli.JPG

Following yesterday's late lights out, there was extended time to rest up after shachris. However there was a treat in store for Bochurim of the shiurim who have already completed Perek Lulav V'Aravah. Rosh Yeshiva of Morristown, Rabbi Wilshanski gave of his time to give an in depth shiur on the Perek that they had just completed.

This was obviously a very special occasion and the bochurim felt a true sense of Yeshiva. Our thanks to Rabbi Wilshanski and a yasher koiach to the bochurim for completing the Perek.

Waves, Water and Winners
Thursday, Elul 2

Water Park.jpg

It is not often that you expect to have a full trip, following two full activities. However the happy faces of the Talmidim will tell you that it was done. The buses rolled to Camel Beach Water Park, a monstrous water park in the heart of the Pocono Mountains.

While lights lit up the once ice-laden ski runs, all the attention was focused on the water slides. The focal point of the evening was the announcement of the color war winners. Team of Atzmo won, and the judges were duly dragged into the water.

The sun had long set and was closer to his time to rise, when the bochurim were served peaches and bottled water (and donuts). The parentheses are an attempted apology to the health punters.

The buses drove back with an unusual hush the common sound aboard. Truly a great trip.

T.B.P Events Come To A Close
Wednesday, Elul 1

TBP 5-6.jpg

With Color War last week there was no opportunity to reward those who finished the quota for Parshas Eikev, therefore there were two events in the space of two days to make up for the missing event. The first event was just good ole' Pizza and Fries, the second was a scrumptious and nutritious Chinese Dinner.

That was the wrap on the smashing T.B.P events for Shnas Hashloishim. Follow links for list of who completed the quota: week 5, week 6.

Dance Night.jpg

Dance night was held on Motzei Shabbos, Parshas Re'eh. It was in honor of YSP's 30th year. Aaron Frank wowed the bochurim as he held an upbeat tempo for well over two hours. The bochurim pulled out their best dance moves. Obviously there were those who chanced their vocal cords with the mic as well.

Relaxing Bowling
Friday, Menachem Av 26

Bowling.jpg

Following color war a more relaxed approach was taken on Thursday. The highlight of the relaxation was a relaxing trip bowling. The lanes were all YSP'S for an hour and a half, for the bochurim to bowl at their leisure. Snacks were given and the buses then made their way back to YSP. A pizza dinner in the picnic area was in order to top off the relaxing day.

Color War In YSP
Friday, Menachem Av 26

CW 1.jpgCW 2.jpg

It all started after seder chassidus, a show in the Berger Auditorium. While it seemed a bit odd, it was not totally out of the ordinary. Color War was broken out, or was it? Confusion reigned as many thought it to be a fake. The confusion was further enhanced when a regular maariv took place and then it was time for the Loi Yiso Goi El Goi Cherev masts to be hoisted as it was made official.

Teams were split and the Generals and their Lieutenants were introduced. Nobody was quite aware of the enormity of the two days that lay ahead. Here it is important to note that morning learning classes run as usual during learning class.

Following learning class it was time for Halacha skits. The unknown funny side of many bochurim come to the fore as the spectators from both teams are thrown into fits of laughter.

If the Halacha skits pack a punch then the theme plays were a total knock out. In a short space of time, the Gym was transformed into a stage. The backdrops were pristine and the props looked authentic. The acting was also of class, to ensure enthralling and captivating performances form both teams.

The hour was late, yet the heads (excuse the pun) of teams gathered their men as they discussed the best way to approach the next day of the war. Theme speeches were to be prepare and scavengers were under construction. It was the ultimate search for meaning and humor. Meanwhile a theme song was being composed, grammen was being written, staff gifts were sought out, almost breathtaking just to read.

Then there was the real deal that had to be taken care of, the costumes and the props and a befitting judges entrance. Atzmo chose mummies and Zulas chose lifeguards as they went about building their areas. The center piece for Zulas being a refreshing and sparkling indoor pool, and the center piece for Atzmo being a pyramid and a sarcophagus.

The grand sing was smashing, motivating, uplifting and everything in between. Spirits soared for 3 hours as late night turned into very early morning. (Not to worry we let them sleep and had them up on time for Krias Shma) Refreshments were duly provided to ensure optimum chays throughout. A tired yet content feeling was felt as maariv was davened and lights out took place.

The All-Star Game
Thursday, Menachem Av 25

All Star.jpg

Well, it was one of the more anticipated events, the All-Star game 5770. The weather predictions were bleak but that's all they remained predictions, as the weather was fantastic. Perhaps the weather was a reflection of the mood in the stands as both the Lebedike and Hartzige fans turned up in numbers, to give support to their respective all stars.

The festive atmosphere was fed by the free cotton candy and pop-corn. The baseball on the field was also up to scratch as a close game plated itself out.

The scoreline doesn't suggest such competitiveness as Hartzige ran out 5-1 winners over the spirited Lebedike team. It was the Lebedike who took the lead from only the second pitch of the game, as a solo home run gave them the lead.

Excellent fielding by both teams saw a rapid pace to the game. It was Hartzig though who showed the heart went it was needed, as they rallied 5 runs to snatch the victory. But the real winner was sportsmanship and Y.S.P.

Inspirational Day
Monday, Menachem Av 22

Picture4.jpg

Sunday was a very serious day in YSP. Reveille was a few minutes earlier as the bochurim prepared themselves for the trip to the Ohel. Panim were written. All the necessary pre-requisites to writing a Pan were conveyed to the bochurim by their learning teachers.

Following shachris, the buses headed straight to the Ohel. Over there they were given a brief talk by Rabbi Goldman and they then entered the Ohel.

Upon exit from the Ohel, the bochurim were given a brunch being that they had not eaten as is customary prior to entering the Ohel. The bochurim spent the better part of three hours at the Ohel, giving ample opportunity for everyone to make it a meaningful occasion.

The buses then rolled to 770, where Mincha was davened. Following that, the bochurim took turns entering the Rebbes room and saying some Tehillim. After that there was a tour of the library and the Friediker Rebbe's apartment.

Snacks were served in Tenafly New Jersey, where Toffuti Ice cram was generously donated and some words from Rabbi Shain were heard.

A day of richness in content ended as the buses pulled up to the RCA.

Chinese Chow
Wednesday, Menachem Av 17

Chicken.jpg

We wouldn't want a regular day to pass by. So we have ways and means to spice things up, or in this case add some Chinese zing. The setting was the Chinese picnic tables decorated with distinctly Chinese colors. (To find out what Chinese colors speak to a decor expert)

Then the scene was complete with great Chinese cuisine the noodles and soya sauce string beans so effortlessly complimented by sesame chicken with lashings of mouth watering sweet and sour sauce.

The taste and the memories were certainly to savor.

Mivtza Gemorah Ba'al Peh
Wednesday, Menachem Av 17

GBP.jpg

YSP is not only YSP, it is also very much a Yeshivas Kayitz L'Masmidim. Testimony to this undoubted fact is the mivtza that has been going on for a few years, and that is the recital of Perek Lulav V'Aravah, Shakla V'Tarya Baal Peh.

Being our 30th summer, this mivtza was given an added emphasis, and it definitely paid off, as those finishing the preliminary stage of the mivtza were markedly more than previous years.

Sixty Five bochurim passed the initial stage of the mivtza by saying the first blat and a half, they were duly awarded with Sefer Haminhagim Chabad.

The resounding success to date is a tribute to the learning director and his very capable team of teachers. Also credit to the general staff for the very necessary incentives provided. At the end of the mivtza they are given a test on the full Perek.

The great outdoors was in fine form as she played host to the bochurim of YSP at one of her more picturesque locations-The Delaware River.

There was enough white water to keep thrill seekers interested, and enough serene swells to ensure relaxation ramblers were also thoroughly content.

M.M..JPG

Every second week in YSP there is a melave malka, we do not exaggerate when we say that YSP have become famous for their Melava Malka's and Motzei Shabbos Parshas Vaeschanan proved exactly why.

The decor was elegant and the cuisine tastfuly set up to go along with the great taste. There was a story and songs, and then shmaryonkee with a difference as the bochurim were able to vote for their favorite shmayonkee out of four shmayonkees that were well presented.

It was the third night in a row of entertainment as the Berger Auditorium, where each night's shows were held, became synonymous with a grand old good time.

It was quirky and witty and obviously funny, but not wishing to compromise seder chassidus erev, the entertainment was intentionally postponed to after learning classes. The bochurim then davened maariv and had lights out.

In addition to all the regular happenings, there is an extra curricular ongoing program. It is incentive for those who go above and beyond. The program is called bloteh and is run by the talented Zushi Rivkin who co-ordinates and brings a unique chayus to YSP.

For those who deserved there was a Bloteh Farbrengen. We will hopefully have a full Bloteh run-down in the near future.

Magic & Munching
Friday, Tammuz 27

 Magic.jpg

The learning program has settled into a steady rhythm, as has the sports, but that does not mean that there is a lack of variety.

It was the variety seekers who were thrilled on Wednesday. Many were  showing very slight withdrawal symptoms from a non-meat diet, so we thought we would quell the withdrawal symptoms by serving piping hot pizza for all to enjoy.

Pizza is pizzazz but it can certainly do with an added topping, so we threw in a magic show for good measure. The magician was quick to point out that what he was doing was not real magic, but rather slights of hand and illusions. It was spell binding and riveting.

After two nights of thoroughly professional entertainment, many have forgotten as to the lack of trips. It would be a brave man to bet on another show tonight, but there are brave men in YSP  so stay sited.

The Nine Days News
Tuesday, Menachem Av 2

 No Swimming.jpg

While nine day restrictions are in force, which means besides for the obvious which we are all aware of, there is further pre-cautions taken. There is no going off campus what so ever.

This gives us the opportunity to get down to some of the more general details of YSP. It would intrigue many as to the great  numberof Koihanim we have in YSP. This was evident the first shabbos. In YSP aliyos are rewarded to those who display the necessary maturity in following Kriyas Hatoirah. The first four people chosen were all not eligible, simply because they were all koihanim.  Although they obviously did not receive the aliya, it was a true tribute to their lineage, Aron Hakoihen and all his sganim.

The nine days is not only a time to waffle as to the pre-requisites for receiving aliyos. It also means that the YSPorts league moves in to a bigger, better, greater mode. The players give it their all to ensure a high standing come mid-season. The grueling competition means that our EMT turns into a physiotherapist on many an occasion, to get the players back to top fitness for the next days activities. Swimming is also an activity evaded for the nine days.

As reported earlier, the seder chassidus is focused on the Rebbe’s brocha to Bar-mitzva bochurim, to be a Chossid, Yirei Shomayim and Lamdan. With time doing it’s thing and flying along at a pace that only time can clock, the bochurim have moved onto the Yirei Shomayim aspect of the syllabus. While we cannot claim that they are all now full fledged Chassidim, we can say that they have garnered much inspiration from a well thought out and stimulating curriculum.

While the trip activities are temporarily put on hold, that doesn’t mean that the entertainment comes to a hold. Like the sweetness of all natural Illovo sugar, that is as perfect as it is humbly grandiose, YSP and its dedicated directors have devised a way of bringing top-class entertainment right to the bochurim.

Stay sited for the thrills of these outstanding upcoming events.

Shabbos Competition II
Monday, Menachem Av 1

 Shabbos #2.jpg

Shabbos competition has become a sought after prize, after the incentive from the first week, rolled around camp from the lips of those who enjoyed it. The second week incentive did not lag in the lurch as the bochurim were treated to a trip of batting cages and driving range.

7/11 Day
Monday, Menachem Av 1

 7.11.JPG

The 11th of July could not have come at a better time, just before the nine days when a no go off campus rule is in force. The counselors used the opportunity to reward those who behaved by lights ot with a late night. To the dismay of our financial wing, the Slurpees were not free albeit the date.

True to our standards of rewarding those that take TBP seriously, the YSP  TBP directors served up a nutritious Chinese dinner. There was Won-Ton soup and Sesame chicken, egg rolls, sweet & sour chicken and sushi there was not, because sushi is Japanese.

Shabbos Mevorchim in YSP
Sunday, Tammuz 29

It seems fitting that a week in YSP is topped off by a Shabbos in YSP. Shabbos in YSP is the perfect melting pot, where the excitement and emotion of a fun filled and charged up week are channeled into all things befitting a Shabbos.

This is only compounded when it is a Shabbos Mevorchim Chazzak.

It is truly inspiring that in our circles when one mentions Shabbos Mevorchim, the first thing that comes to mind is Tehillim. Reveille was announced for a passable 8:15, with the option of an earlier wake up to ensure an extended Tehillim time. We are truly proud to tell you that 75% of bochurim requested an earlier wake up, a true credit to their upbringing.

As tweeted, this Shabbos we were proud to host Rabbi Gordon. He was not our guest for shabbos, because Rabbi Gordon is no guest in YSP. Rabbi Gordon enthralled the bochurim with his always charismatic story telling that comes straight from the heart.
And of course the bochurim were treated to a YSP staple, as Rabbi Gordon renditioned the Friediker Rebbe's Shir Hageulah.

Tanya Baal Peh is still a force to be reckoned with as bochurim aware of the pot of gold at the end of the TBP rainbow, both bgashmius and bruchnius, strained their mental muscles as they memorised the Tanya with fervor.

Crowning such a Shabbos could be difficult, but the experienced brains trust of YSP, knows how to put their experience into practice. With that we introduce you to a YSP melave malkah.

No expense is spared as the culinary class is doled out in a really thick coating.

The perfect lead in to a Mica Sunday, and a fnb filled week.

Stay sited

A Useful Skill
Friday, Tammuz 27

Luandry.jpg

A few things we do in camp require an explanation as to the education that is imparted, but Friday in YSP the bochurim take a learning curve of indisputable worth.

For many it is a reality check while for others it is a simple realisation. For all it is a new found appreciation for their mothers and Florences who do their laundry. It is a sight to behold as Bochurim who don't know their darks from their lights, let alone the pre-wash from the real wash, go about getting their clothes laundered.

It is a conundrum of confusion and mystification that eventually earns the bochurim freshly laundered clothes. For now this will ahve to suffice as a quick news snippet as to the laundry of our lads.

Stay sited after Shabbos for an in depth news debrifefing as to how the bochurim fared with their first taste of laundry.

BBQ Dinner
Tuesday, Tammuz 24

BBQ.JPG

It is the finishing touch that sets YSP apart. After a long day of learning and a full quota of activities there is nothing like a festive barbecue to raise the already soaring spirits before night seder.

This is no ordinary barbecue as the bochurim are privy to the culinary schedules of the multi-talented staff members. Our tireless general staff of MM&S enterprises were at the inexhaustible brilliant best once again as they ensured that every last detail was accounted for to ensure optimum enjoyment on the part of the bochurim. Hats off to them once again for a job awesomely done. Although it may seem strange to heap praise on them in such a public forum, however credit must be given where due and we most certainly appreciate the efforts.

Liquid intake was the order of the day mainly in the former of good old water, but the health fundis will have to forgive as soda was only a fitting beverage for the barbecue.

All in all and to the joy of all the weather was no longer the talking point of the day but rather the talk was of the scrumptious flavors that lingered large on the tongues of every bochur.

Draft Day
Monday, Tammuz 23

11.JPG

Wow it has been a day of delirious excitement in YSP as the excitement of the sports draft put pulses and enjoyment at a fever pitch. First there was the much anticipated announcement of the captains and then the pensive pondering as to who would be the first pick.

The zal was decked in suitable fashion to ensure a free and fair draft, monitors were in place to ensure that each and every pick was free of any corruption whatsoever. At the end of it all and with the eternal Hashgocha Protis and some heart stopping moments the teams of the niggunim league emerged. The league is split into two divisions, the pamelech league and the lebedike league.

It is a picture of expectancy as potential captains fidget and jostle as they wait for their names to be announced. The second half of the draft for various reasons is not done in a public format. Each and every bochur is given a cap with colours (with a u) exclusive to each team. The kaleidoscope of colourful caps only further enhances the excitement.

By the end of it all, and without further ado, the first sport in the new and final teams takes places. The intensity of competitive sports as opposed to spring training is most definitely felt as the sweat poured off the brows even in the somewhat cooler air of the late afternoon. On the whole and after enough circumlocution and verbosity, I am sure it is clear to all and sundry that a smashing sports season is underway.

The First Taste of Yeshiva
Sunday, Tammuz 22

We don't call it Yeshiva Summer Program for nothing, and the learning program is up and running in an efficient and effective manner. The bochurim learn general maamorim from the Friediker Rebbe with a focus on imbuing sound foundations for an inspired approach to being a Chossid, Yirei Shamayim and Lamdan.

Following shachris and breakfast the bochurim are taught Perek Lulav V' Aravah, with many varied sugyas it is a great Perek to introduce the bochurim to Yeshiva style learning, which the bochurim experience during chazorah b'chavrusa time in the zal. This is followed by a healthy dose of Shulchan Aruch, there is definitely no replacement for simply learning how to live like a Yid.

For night seder which would be a first for many, the bochurim are learning a collection of sichos Like the morning the aim is to hopefully aid in bringing to fruition the Rebbe's brocha to every Barmitzvah bochur to be a Chossid, Yirei Shomayim and Lamdan.

There is incentive aplenty in helping the bochurim break into yeshiva style learning, and we will post the chavrusa of the day and talmidim of the week, each week.

On The First Day
Thursday, Tammuz 19

Summer par excellence notched it up a gear with a day to remember just to wet the appetite.

After shachris and a sumptuous breakfast, it was time for the ikar of the summer to be dealt with, learning classes. The bochurim were split and appointed their respective maggidei shiurim. Lulav V’Arava chimed studiously through the various classrooms. After a fair dose of chazara and shulchan aruch, it was time for lunch.

Lunch was followed with the sports orientation, not to be confused by the much anticipated YSPorts draft, which will take place in a few days. Referees and bochurim alike dusted the cobwebs out of their game in an attempt to impress the scouts for a positive draft pick.

And what a day it was as the bochurim came out with impressive skills as they wooed the scouts with spirited performances.

Here in YSP we like to have a fitting appetizer before the main course. In this vein the brains trust felt it apt to take the bochurim on a first day trip. The bochurim were treated to some roller blading, this is no small event as it came loaded with all the necessary trimmings. Arcades and air-hockey and not to mention a mouth watering donut to complete the glitzy evening.

Shabbos is in sight and if the first day and a half is anything to go by, it seems as if top gear for a summer program may not be high enough.
